Running December 20–22 at the San Gabriel Mission Playhouse
For decades, the Pasadena Dance Theatre (PDT) has been a cornerstone of artistry and community, weaving movement and music into the cultural fabric of Southern California. Now, the curtain rises on a new chapter as Jean Michelle Sayeg and Eric Shah step into the spotlight as Co-Artistic Directors. Their shared history, passion, and innovative spirit promise to honor PDT’s legacy while breathing fresh life into its future.
The first act of their directorship is a reimagining of The Nutcracker, a production beloved by generations of families. Set to Tchaikovsky’s enchanting score, the timeless tale of Clara and her magical journey to the Land of Sweets will unfold with dazzling new elements, honoring tradition while embracing fresh creativity.
This year’s production, running December 20–22 at the San Gabriel Mission Playhouse, is poised to be a visual and emotional feast. Highlights include:
- Dragons and Dreams: In celebration of the Year of the Dragon, two magnificent Chinese Dragons, coached by Master Instructor Kin Lam, will dance across the stage, blending traditional movement with classical ballet.
- Vocals in Harmony: The Pasadena Chorale will join the production, their voices adding rich, live texture to the familiar score.
- Acrobatic Marvels: The U.S. National Men’s Four Acrobatic Gymnasts Team will elevate the Russian dance with their extraordinary athleticism.
- Arabian Mystique: Choreographer Arturo Fernandez’s fresh take on the sultry Arabian dance adds a contemporary twist to this cherished sequence.
These elements, combined with the artistry of PDT alumni and guest stars Aaron Smyth and Matisse Love, ensure this Nutcracker will be a memorable experience for all.

A Journey Home
For Jean Michelle Sayeg, this appointment is more than a career milestone—it’s a homecoming. From the age of eight to seventeen, PDT was her artistic sanctuary. “I grew up here, learning not just steps, but discipline, artistry, and the joy of dance,” Sayeg reflects. Her journey took her from Pasadena to the grand stages of Lincoln Center and the Hollywood Bowl, performing with esteemed companies like State Street Ballet and Smuin Ballet. Now, she returns, not just to lead, but to give back. “My mentors believed in me, nurtured me, and gave me the tools for success. I want to do the same for the next generation.”

The Power of Partnership
Eric Shah brings a complementary passion to the role. With over 20 years of experience as a dancer and educator, his love for teaching and mentoring is the heartbeat of his career. Shah sees their new roles as a chance to blend tradition with innovation. “Pasadena Dance Theatre has a legacy worth preserving, but also immense potential for growth. Together, we aim to connect the past with a bold vision for the future.”
Their synergy, built through years of collaboration, promises to redefine PDT as a beacon of creativity and inclusivity in the arts community.
